What Ukraine Needs

What Ukraine Needs

[your address]

Dear [name of your MP]

I hope you’re well. I’m writing to you as your constituent and also as a friend of Ukraine.

Russia is currently escalating its war of aggression on Ukraine, which began over 10 years ago, and has intensified for over 1000 days since the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.

Russia's invasion and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine is today not just an assault on Ukrainian freedom and democracy, but also a threat to global security. Russia has violated international law and caused extensive human suffering, displacement, and global economic disruption.

Russia employs: Systematic Use of War Crimes in Ukraine

  • Russia’s attacks on civilians, the systematic use of torture, forced deportations, and weaponisation of energy resources show complete disregard for human life.
  • In Ukraine, Russia has gone beyond merely targeting civilians. Russia has kidnapped over 20,000 Ukrainian children and Ukraine is struggling to return them home.

Ukraine needs: Cast Iron Security Guarantees

  • Only unprecedented levels of military support for Ukraine can turn the tide and stop further Russian escalation and proliferation.
  • The UK, along with the United States, promised to support Ukraine’s sovereignty – in signing the Budapest Memorandum 1994 – in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear arsenal. It’s crucial that the UK honours its international commitments to Ukraine.

The UK needs: To Get Serious About Frozen Russian Assets in the UK

  • The UK Government announced in October it would be using profits from Russia's frozen assets to provide a £2.3 billion loan to Ukraine. We thank the UK Government for this continued support of Ukraine.
  • However, the Government has still not released official figures for the total value of Russian assets held in the UK. It’s estimated that £18 billion worth of individual assets have been frozen so far, alongside around £26 billion worth of Russian central bank assets.

The UK must do much more to help Ukraine prevail sooner. We need to be more decisive in our support for Ukraine. The UK should take the lead in organising a Save Ukraine Summit, to ensure Ukraine has the support it so badly requires.

Please encourage the new Government to go even further in its support of Ukraine. I’m urging the following:

Support Ukraine until victory

  • Artillery munitions - Ukraine urgently needs large amounts of artillery munitions on the battlefield. The UK must do everything in its power to source artillery munitions and send them to Ukraine as soon as possible.
  • Air-defence – Ukraine needs more air defence systems and anti-air missiles to protect civilians from Russian air bombardments.

Deploy Frozen Russian Assets to Ukraine

  • The UK must lead the global effort to use frozen Russian assets to fund weapons and ammunitions, and to finance Ukraine’s reconstruction now, not after the war.
  • The £2.5 billion from Roman Abramovich's sale of Chelsea FC, collected in 2022, must be urgently deployed to support war victims in Ukraine, as promised.

Back War Crimes Prosecutions

  • The UK must play a key role in strengthening support for international tribunals investigating Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Please write to the relevant Ministers requesting their help with this matter.

This is Ukraine’s moment of need. Ukrainians are relying on the UK’s support in their battle for survival. Please help.

Best regards,
