Urgent Action For Ukraine on the 3rd Anniversary of Russia's Invasion
[your address]
Dear [name of your MP]
The 24th February marks the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Therefore, I am writing to you to ask the Government to take decisive action in support of Ukraine’s defence, to ensure a lasting peace and security on the European continent.
Wars inevitably end, but how they end very much determines the future. If Ukraine is not given the right support to resist Russian aggression, any peace settlement will be fragile, and Europe will remain vulnerable to future Russian threats. What’s more, the best way to bring Russia to the negotiating table is to strengthen Ukraine’s position on the battlefield. A well-armed and well-supported Ukraine guarantees a just and sustainable peace.
This is the UK’s moment to shine. Together with our European partners, we can provide the support that Ukraine needs in order to prevail. NATO’s European members have a combined GDP of £18 trillion—ten times that of Russia—yet in comparison, they spend 40% less on helping Ukraine defend itself than Russia does on waging its genocidal war.
According to recent research by the Tony Blair Institute, an additional £31 billion per year in military support—just 0.2% of European NATO members’ GDP—would be enough to match Russia’s military resources. Given Russia’s extreme losses and economic struggles, this would force it into a position where continuing the war would lead to disaster, creating the conditions for meaningful negotiations.
The idea that we somehow cannot afford this level of support is absurd. Both the UK and Europe raised significant amounts to aid economic recovery after COVID-19, and similarly after the global financial crisis. The threat posed by Russian imperialism is even greater, and failing to act would certainly be more costly in the long run.
This is not just about standing in solidarity with Ukraine—it is about ensuring the security of the UK and Europe as a whole, especially in the current context of a potential American withdrawal from Europe and the unpredictability of a Trump presidency. Strengthening Ukraine strengthens European security. Ukraine has developed some of the world’s most advanced military technology, particularly in drones, artificial intelligence (AI), and electronic warfare. Partnering with and investing in Ukraine’s defence industry is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to scale up Europe’s own defence capabilities.
As my MP, I urge you to advocate for the following steps:
1. Increased military aid to Ukraine, including both financial support and direct weapons deliveries.
2. Greater investment in the UK and European defence industries, including direct partnerships with Ukraine’s rapidly advancing defence sector.
3. A clear strategy for the UK and Europe to take a leading role in shaping a just and lasting peace, ensuring we are not reliant on others to determine our security.
4. As of February 2025, approximately $300 billion of Russian assets have been frozen globally. These assets must be deployed to help Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction.
The choices made now will define European security for decades. The UK must stand firm in its commitment to Ukraine, both for moral reasons and for its own strategic interests. Failing to do so would be an abdication of responsibility, leaving Europe weaker and less secure.
I would greatly appreciate a response from the relevant Government Minister, outlining the steps the Government is taking to ensure the UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine at this crucial moment.
Best regards,
[your name]
