Enforcing sanctions against Russia

Enforce sanctions against Russian oil and gas

[your address]

Dear [name of your MP]

I hope you’re well. I’m writing to you as your constituent, and also as a friend of Ukraine.

The sanctions against Russia are starting to work, and economic penalties are gaining force over time. However, we also need to enforce and implement them.

We rightly call for a total embargo of Russian oil and gas but if we are still enabling the Russian federation to export it to other countries then what good is that?

Data recently shared with The New Statesman reveals that since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, UK-based P&I clubs have insured more than €120bn in Russian oil and gas products.

We have committed politically and financially to resisting Putin, but we need to take an honest look at our own UK businesses, and to ask which of them is helping him continue this war.

With that in mind, I kindly request you to write to the Sanctions Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan asking her to respond to the report published by the New Statesman and urging her to do more to ensure Russia is not inadvertently assisted to sell its oil and gas.

Income from oil export is greater now than before Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine, highlighting the failure of measures to curb its war chest. With your help this can change, and this war will end sooner!

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,
